STATE DESCRIPTION
- Guanajuato has played a key role is the history of Mexico as the birthplace of the independence movement. Traditionally an agricultural and mining region, Guanajuato is now an important industrial state with 78 maquilas employing close to 13 thousand workers.-INEGI 1999
- The State of Guanajuato is located in the central region of Mexico called "El Bajio". It borders the states of San Luis Potosi to the north, Queretaro to the east, Michoacan to the south and Jalisco to the west.

LOCATION
- The city of Irapuato is situated at a longitude of 101° 20’1", west of the Greenwich Meridian and at a 20° 40’28" latitude north.
- Irapuato is located at 5,676 feet above sea level.
- Bordering north with the municipalities of Silao and Guanajuato, to the west with Salamanca, south with the municipalities of Pueblo Nuevo and Abasolo and to the east with Romita.
REGIONAL INFLUENCE
Irapuato is renowned for its strawberry production, earning the title of Strawberry capital of the world. Along with strawberry’s Irapuato is a major exporter of agricultural goods such as cauliflower, carrots, broccoli, and garlic. Textiles are a major industry in the region employing 42% of the workforce. The petroleum industry makes up 9 % of the workforce while agroindustry and others account for the remaining majority. Irapuato is situated close enough to benefit from the related operations of the auto manufacturing industry. The main automobile and auto parts producing states include Queretaro, San Luis Potosi, Aguascalientes, Michoacan, Jalisco, and Zacatecas.
