STATE DESCRIPTION
Traditionally Tabasco’s primary source for economic activity has been the petroleum industry. A wide range of agricultural, aquaculture and fishery, and forestry based industries and services also exist in Tabasco. With 120 Miles of shoreline along the Gulf of Mexico and a fluvial system that covers most of the state’s surface, Tabasco represents 1% of the national territory and 30% of the country’s hydrological resources.
LOCATION
The state of Tabasco is located in the southeastern region of Mexico. Bordering with the states of Campeche, Chiapas and Veracruz and with the Republic of Guatemala.
REGIONAL INFLUENCE
The state of Tabasco is using oil industry revenues to generate a shift towards industrial diversification. Commerce and services represent 60% of the GDP. Sectors with the highest growth rate are Construction 16.8%, Mining 14.8%, and Services 2.2%. Presently, agriculture and cattle breeding represent 7.5% of the GDP. Tabasco is well known as one of the most important producers of primary products for the cattle industry. The main agricultural products are tropical fruits such as banana, coconut, papaya, watermelon, cocoa and citrics as well as other cultives such as sugar cane, rubber and pepper.

INFRASTRUCTURE
The state of Tabasco and the city of Villahermosa are economically based largely on the Petroleum industry; therefore the infrastructure is largely developed to suit the petroleum industry. Tabasco’s position as the strategic center for southern Mexico, is complimented by growing infrastructure and communication facilities. The state has ready access to transportation networks, which include communications by air, sea, rail, road and rivers. Two ports are poised to serve the emerging markets of Central America. Dos Bocas Harbor is the main port serving the national oil industry and Frontera Harbor is focused to commercial activity. Tabasco has an extensive river system fed by two major rivers of Mexico. The Highway and railroad systems are connected to air, and sea and the industrial infrastructure provided by the three industrial parks which are located in Villahermosa.
